I grew up in the 2.5 sq. miles that make up the Rock of Gibraltar so the sense of space and scale of the landscapes in the US will always fill me with a sense of awe. My only contact with such imposing landscapes up until my late teenage years was via a very small black and white television screen.
These places continue to feel mysterious, slightly foreboding and almost alien. This sense of benign menace that places like this conjure is balanced by the flashes of solitude and serenity that are impossible to experience on the crowded coastal strips of the Mediterranean and Southern California. The sad realization that the ability of the such places to produce these experiences is fast disappearing is a constant source of sadness and motivation.
My images represent an effort to hold on to these moments and feelings as much as they are a means of sharing them with others.
Black and White is how I experienced most the world I in my formative years and it undoubtedly also provides comfort, familiarity and a link to my past.
